How to Use ELL Grammar Packs

Use ELL Grammar Packs for instruction or assign student resources for grammar practice. Use the Grammatical Structure Notes to be confident and clear during inquiry-based grammar instruction. Use the lesson sequence shown here to support grammar instruction.

Lesson Sequence

Step 1: Introduce the Grammar
Introduce the vocabulary and the grammar focus using the Grammar Card and Guide.

Step 2: Focus on the Grammar
Explore the Grammar Card and Guide to discuss the grammar's form, meaning, and usage.

Step 3: Practice the Grammar
Use the Syntax Activity to have students demonstrate understanding of the grammar focus by constructing sentences using cut-out words.

Step 4: Use the Grammar for Writing
Students discuss and practice grammar usage in their writing.

Step 5: Use the Grammar for Speaking
Students practice their newly acquired grammar in paired-speaking activities that encourage proper grammar through use of dialogue frames.

Step 6: Apply the Grammar
Students complete the Notebook page individually, in pairs, or as a group, to show their understanding of the grammar focus.

Step 7: Assess the Grammar
Students complete the quiz to show their progress.
