Shared Reading

Model foundational and fluency skills and comprehension strategies with Shared Reading Books. Reduce the cognitive load for students by sharing the responsibility for reading, so they can focus on applying literacy skills, building knowledge, and acquiring new vocabulary. Refer to the five-day Lesson Plan and Printable Cards for additional instruction and practice.

Instructional Tips

  • Read closely: Through multiple readings of the text, model how to ask and answer text-dependent questions, cite textual evidence, and make connections to and beyond the text.
  • Integrate technology: Use the projectable and eBook versions of books for whole-class, small-group, and independent instruction.
  • Increase engagement and discussion: Refer to the Projectable Book with Prompts to pose questions, complete tasks, and interact with the text.
  • Provide opportunities for independent practice: Assign printable or digital versions of the book for students to apply learning after reading the text collaboratively.
  • Hang the Projectable Book Characters Posters: Introduce the characters and refer to them when using the Projectable Book with Prompts. The characters help teach essential reading skills.
