The U.S. Constitution
The Constitution is the first and most fundamental law of the United States. This founding document divides the government into executive, legislative, and judicial branches and explains the powers and responsibilities of each branch. Americans have changed the Constitution many times through the amendment process. The first ten amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, protect the rights of all American citizens. The Constitution continues to guide the country as the founders intended.
