Classic (fiction), 2,493 words, Level Y (Grade 5), Multi-Part Classics, Lexile 900L
Alice finds herself in an awkward game of croquet with the King and Queen of Hearts. The game features croquet arches of live playing-card soldiers, hedgehog balls, and flamingo mallets. The Queen threatens to behead just about everyone in her path, including the Cheshire Cat, who has shown the king disrespect. However, the executioner is left empty-handed, as the cat has partially vanished and doesn't seem to have a head to behead.
