One evening, while Ermengarde is with Sara in her attic room, the two girls overhear Miss Minchin next door, accusing Becky of stealing food. Sara knows Becky is innocent but admits to Ermengarde that Miss MInchin keeps both her and Becky in a state of near-starvation. Ermengarde is shocked. She sneaks down to her room to fetch a huge basket of food from her aunt. Meanwhile, Sara uses the secret knock to summon Becky to her room.
