Each multi-session fluency & comprehension pack provides materials and instruction for five sessions.
Students are presented with a fluency passage that covers some of the same vocabulary and content as the
companion book. After reading the fluency passage, the student, with the tutor, reads a portion of the companion
text each day to build comprehension. The fifth, and last, session includes a final fluency read
and a comprehension assessment.
Fluency is a key foundational skill that helps students read complex text with greater understanding.
When students read with accuracy and expression at an appropriate reading rate, their fluency supports
their comprehension. Repeated practice improves word recognition, automaticity, and student confidence.
Use these tutor handouts for instructional tips on teaching fluency and comprehension.
Print, assemble, and train the tutors on the use of each pack.
Instructions contained in each pack have been specifically written for tutors from varying
backgrounds and with varying experience working with students.
Estimated time allotments are provided for each lesson step; tutors should follow the lesson
sequence as outlined in each lesson plan.
Specific resources used for each step are identified next to the instructions.
