Peyton Farquhar is a well to do farmer ardently devoted to the Confederate cause during the Civil War. He takes it upon himself to scout for the South and is captured by Federal soldiers. As Farquhar is about to be executed by hanging, he focuses on his surroundings and his experiences, taking the reader back with him to the safety of his home, until we realize that the entire escape was a fantasy brought on by the dying man's final vision.
